Although you will want your children and pets to feel at home as soon as possible, it’s worth having them looked after for the bulk of the moving day.
You will be stressed and have 101 things to do, and the last thing you will want to deal with is entertaining children, or worrying that they (or your pets) are going to get hurt etc..
Have someone look after them until you have at least some of your new house looking like your home, and then get them back!
Depending on your child, you may want to unpack their bedroom(s) first so that they feel at home as soon as possible, or they may prefer to be a part of this themselves. Whatever you decide, I would definitely advise leaving at least their box that they packed up (see tip #10) for them to sort out, as this will make them feel a part of things.
Getting your kids involved as much as possible. For the younger ones make a game out of it; like who can pack their toys the fastest. Labeling the boxes can be fun too. Take them to a dollar store, craft store or teacher supply store and let them pick out fun stickers that they can put on the boxes to represent it is theirs. They can also pick out other stickers to help mark the boxes for the rest of the house.

Your current home works for you – without really having to think about things anymore. You have the right flooring, furniture, window dressings etc. that fit your lifestyle.
However, when you move you may have agreed to leave certain things in the house such as curtains, freezer etc…
As such, it’s worth making a list of these things, remembering to leave them behind and not pack them (put a sticker on things that the removals company shouldn’t touch to be safe).
You don’t want to end up moving only to find you have brought something with you that you shouldn’t have!
Decluttering your home is a massive job in itself, and this is a job only you can do.
As such, why not take the strain off a little and get the removals to do what they are best at – and that’s to pack everything up for you.
For me, its a no-brainer for so many reasons: –

They can do this SO quickly! (it’s great to watch the experts in action!)
It usually doesn’t cost a lot (a lot less than I imagined it would cost), and when you are talking about the cost of moving I think it’s an expense that’s well worth it.
It frees you up to oversee everything
They supply all boxes and packaging which will save you time and expense
By now your car will be very full! (valuables, paperwork, essentials box and a box for each child), but there’s one thing extra thats worth taking with you – and that is bedding.
If you have your bedding ready to go when you get to your home – whether you arrive late at night or have more time to unpack, you know that you have something to sleep on and be more comfortable on that first night.
After all – things can go slowly on moving day, and you may not get your keys until it’s really too late to start unpacking – so best be prepared!.
Go to your rental agency with a general idea of what size of truck you need based on the above estimates, and also provide them with a list of all your large items and the number of each that you have to move. For instance, you might have three couches or two king-sized beds or two fridges to move. Often, larger items or specialty items will require a larger truck and possibly special moving tools.
While using a truck rental company’s estimate when selecting the right size of truck or trailer to rent may be helpful, keep in mind that this is merely an estimate. Some people have much more substantial furnishings, more things, and tons of stuff crammed into every closet and cabinet. Other packrats even have entire garages jam-packed with items from floor to ceiling. A smart way to better estimate a suitable truck size is to attempt to cluster your things together, such as in an unused formal dining room, a garage or another large space. This effort also helps you prep for the move. When you pack a place full of items and measure the area, you will have a better idea about the right truck size for your needs.
As you begin packing boxes and storage containers, you may get a much better idea of how much space you need in a moving truck. After all, it can be challenging to estimate truck space you need for all your kitchen items stored in cabinets and drawers. After you pack non-essentials, you can determine how many additional boxes you need for the essentials that you will pack at the last minute. In addition to considering boxes, pay attention to how many furnishings or appliances you own and the dimensions of each. Remember to take advantage of vertical space in a truck.
Most small moving trucks have rear wheel wells that stick out and reduce the amount of flat cargo space.
Moving trucks between 14′-17′ are the most common sizes rented. They tend to be the most inexpensive trucks because of the quantity available.

If you plan to pack and load your moving truck by yourself or with help from your friends you should defer to a larger truck size. Professional movers are trained to maximize the overall space, whereas those not professionally trained may not be able to achieve the same level of efficiency. If you are considered about space consumption consider hiring moving labor to properly load your truck.
Are you moving? Whether you’re shifting to an apartment or a house, upsizing or downsizing, planning is the most important thing you can do.
Cover the openings of your toiletries with saran wrap, then put the tops back on.
Make a detailed corresponding list of what’s in each box by number. This makes it easier to make sure you didn’t forget any boxes, or god forbid, someone stole one. AND, if there’s anything valuable in there, you won’t be broadcasting it to the world by writing it down right there on the box.
Once you’ve decluttered your personal belongings and have a rough idea of what you’ll be taking, now you should book your removal company. You could attempt to do it yourself, but it would be a lot of added stress and time.
The removal company will have many years’ experience of carefully packing, handling and loading delicate and heavy items so they arrive safely at your new house.
Does everything fit your new home?
Furniture that is in your existing home may well not fit into your new home, and it’s best to know this up front so you can sell it / donate it before you move.
Take some time to measure doorways etc. and work out whether the larger items of furniture (your sofa/dresser etc.) will fit into your new space.
There would be nothing worse than leaving a sofa on the front garden on moving day!
TIP – This is also an useful exercise for working out whether you have suitable space for all your furniture. If you are downsizing it’s worth working out what can and cannot fit into your new home, and sorting these out before moving day.

At the top of the Calgary Tower, a viewing platform and revolving restaurant put sightseers 191 meters high in one of the city’s landmark buildings. Until 1984, the tower was the tallest in the city. Loose Moose Theatre
Located on the second floor of the Crossroads Market in the historic Inglewood neighbourhood, this theatre company presents weekly improvised comedy shows. Their Maestro Improv show on Friday nights at 8 p.m. features elimination rounds, where audience members rate performers chosen at random until one performer wins the ‘maestro improviser’ title, going on to direct shows during Gorilla Theatre on Saturday nights. Every show is different, but they’re always very funny. Tickets: general admisison $15, student $12. Some shows not suitable for young viewers. www.loosemoose.com
Heritage Park Historical Village
This living history museum features more than 180 attractions and exhibits that re-create Western Canadian history from the 1860s to the 1950s. Interact with costumed interpreters, explore pioneer homes and businesses, ride a steam train, board a paddlewheeler on the Glenmore Reservoir, try antique rides and games, and enjoy Western Canadian cuisine at Selkirk Grille. While the park is open seasonally May through October, year-round daily attractions include dining at Selkirk Grille and Railway Caf?, exploring Haskayne Mercantile Block – a collection of one-of-a-kind boutiques and an antique shop – the Big Rock Interpretive Brewery, and the Gasoline Alley Museum of vintage cars. The Hangar Flight Museum
Formerly known to locals as the Aerospace Museum of Calgary, The Hangar Flight Museum was originally used as a drill hall for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan in 1941. The space later turned into the first aviation museum in Calgary. Visit over 20 exhibits that commemorate Canadian flight history, from the first jet combat aircraft to the world’s first certified helicopter. The Hangar Movie Nights feature aerospace- themed films the second Thursday of each month from October to May. Fish Creek Provincial Park
One of the largest urban parks in North America, and the largest in Canada, Fish Creek features the Bow Valley Ranch Visitor Centre, Environmental Learning Centre, and a seasonal interpretive program and Sikome Aquatic Facility – the manmade beach and lake are the perfect spot to enjoy summer. Bird watch, fish, bike, and hike through trails in the riverine forest location.
